Moorfields Pharmaceuticals Wins GS1 Award
GS1 UK, the not-for-profit supply chain standards and solutions organisation, presented the first Excellence Awards in association with Cranfield School of Management to Concepta Lowry of Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) and Moorfields Eye Hospital at a special ceremony during the GS1 UK Annual Conference on 22 April 2010.
Nick Precious accepted the Company Award on behalf of Moorfields Eye Hospital. The London hospital has successfully implemented GS1 bar codes to uniquely identify its medicines and improve the efficiency of its manufacturing process. Moorfields has pioneered the use of GS1 standards for medicines manufacturing and has inspired other NHS hospitals to explore the possibilities of bar coding in healthcare.
Professor Richard Wilding from Cranfield’s Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management, said: “It is increasingly important for organisations to improve data quality across their supply chain. Cranfield is delighted to support these awards which recognise those individuals and organisations who are encouraging others to reap the benefits of good supply chain data. Bad data not only impacts British retailers and suppliers’ profits, but also customer satisfaction which is the lifeblood of any business.”

The awards recognise outstanding work, innovation, boldness, commitment, leadership and pioneering spirit when implementing the GS1 System. A panel of industry experts judged the awards based on a set of weighted criteria. Individual Award nominees were required to champion the promotion and implementation of GS1 standards, be an agent of change and make a visible contribution to implementing GS1 standards. Organisations nominated for the Company Award were expected to deliver clear, measurable business benefits through the adoption of GS1 standards and champion their wider adoption through their industry or sector.
“GS1 UK is passionate about businesses using common data standards to drive efficiency and improve patient safety. We are delighted to reward Concepta Lowry and Moorfields Eye Hospital for their hard work and dedication in promoting the use of GS1 standards within their sectors,” says James Spittle, Chairman, GS1 UK.
The winners were presented with a personalised plaque by Professor Richard Wilding from Cranfield School of Management and James Spittle, GS1 UK’s Chairman at GS1 UK’s Annual Conference which was attended by more than 250 representatives from the retail, DIY and healthcare sectors.
