Lubristil Eye Drops now reimbursable on the Drug Tariff

01.06.2011

Moorfields Pharmaceuticals are pleased to announce that Lubristil™ eye drops are now listed on the drug tariff. Lubristil™ is a Sodium Hyaluronate eye lubricant, which is considered the gold standard in the management of dry eye conditions.

Sodium Hyaluronate is a pure natural polymer which is already present in structures of the human eye. Its ‘viscoelastic’ properties mean it can easily be applied to the surface of the eye to provide a stable coating with lubricating and hydrating properties. This makes it suitable to treat any level of dry eye conditions which are characterised by impaired tear production.

An additional benefit of Lubristil™ Sodium Hyaluronate is its low resistance when blinking, so it offers enhanced comfort when the drops are instilled. Sodium Hyaluronate has been shown to remain in contact with the ocular surface for a significantly longer period of time than other treatments.

Because Lubristil™ is preservative-free it is particularly suitable to patients who have become sensitive to the preservatives in eye drops or regular use of contact lenses.

Lubristil™ carries a CE product mark and is classified as a medical device in the UK.  The product can be ordered through pharmaceutical wholesalers.

MAIN PROPERTIES OF LUBRISTIL

1-Water retaining and wetting properties - Longer lasting

The molecules of Sodium Hyaluronate are able to hold on to water molecules and deliver long-lasting wetting properties to the surface of the eye

2-Viscoelastic and Pseudoplastic properties - Covers the entire eye

Sodium Hyaluronate maintains its viscosity in the open eye. During blinking, Sodium Hyaluronate fluidity increases, (pseudoplastic characteristic), so enabling coating of the entire eye surface.

3-Re-epithelialisation properties - Promotes healing and protection

Sodium Hyaluronate fosters the migration of corneal epithelium cells and offers protection of the eye surface during the wound healing process.
